Wednesday I went to Lavallette with my attorney for work. We heard rt 35 was open down there and so that was our route. We had no idea what to expect of the damage from Hurricane Sandy. I brought my camera in hopes of being able to get some pictures. Once we passed Point Pleasant and Bay Head we entered Mantoloking, which is just north of Lavallette. That was the worst. I didn't take any pictures on the way there but after visiting a client at a school my attorney offered to drive so I could take pictures. Mantaloking got hit pretty hard getting the brunt of the storm. You were not allowed to stop on the side of the road or head down any side streets unless you were construction. There were cops everywhere including at the school. Gov. Christie was just at the school we visited the precious day. Here is a glimpse of what we saw.
You can see how far the sand went into these bungalow homes about 2-3 blocks from the ocean.
The house in the distance is "beachfront." You can see how much sand accumulated and they are trying to put back.
All we could say was "oh my god," "did you see that house?!" "This is horrible!" Many house front doors had an X spray painted on them in different colors for different reasons. In the school we visited only 20 kids had returned home. The rest were still displaced along with teachers. They are rebuilding homes they thought they would be able to go back into but instead needed to be torn down completely. Hopefully they can rebuild our shores better and in hopes of preventing future disasters.
